"Double Trouble" by Susan May Warren Review and Giveaway

NOTE: BE SURE AND SCROLL DOWN TO THE REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY FOR "HERE BURNS MY CANDLE" BY LIZ CURTIS HIGGS ENDING ON MARCH 31, 2010. DON'T MISS YOUR CHANCE TO WIN THIS WONDERFUL BOOK!

Double Trouble

Back Cover: PJ Sugar has finally found something she's good at. Now he is trying not to mess it up. Her first official case as a private investigator -- well, technically a P. I's assistant -- is house sitting for a witness in protective custody. No danger involved, assures her boss Jeremy Kane, much to PJ's disappointment.

At least PJ can take the next 10 days to figure out the rest of her life... Especially whether or not she would accept Detective Boone Buckam's marriage proposal. But one break in by a late night prowler is enough to put Boone's request on hold send PJ's sleuthing skills into overdrive. Clearly the witness is hiding something... And it may cost PJ her life.

About The Author: Susan May Warren is the RITA Award-winning author of more than 25 novels. She spent eight years as a missionary in Russia with her husband and four children before returning to Minnesota's North Shore to write full-time. She loves vanilla lattes and hang out with friends, and she's always on the lookout for a great story. Visit her website at www.Susan May Warren. com.

My Take: My favorite genre of books is a good cozy mystery. But, my next favorite would definitely be suspense/P. I. Susan May Warren's Double Trouble is a light-- hearted P.I. mystery starring the one and only PJ Sugar. PJ has come home to Kellogg, Minnesota, after a tumultuous young adulthood and is ready to prove to those around her that she can take care of herself. Unfortunately, the harder she tries to faster she falls. PJ finds herself in one predicament after another. The good thing about this is that there are two men in her life who seem to be there whenever she needs them to rescue her. Her high school boyfriend, Daniel "Boone" Buckham has renewed his love for her and has asked for her hand in marriage. PJ is thrilled, but this does not come without conditions. Boone wants PJ to give up her PI job because he thinks it's too dangerous for her. This is definitely a dilemma for PJ.

Then again, there is Jeremy Kane, her boss. If PJ loves Boone, then why does she care so much about what Jeremy thinks? Why is she trying so hard to show him that she will make a great PI? Does she hold a secret torch for Jeremy that she isn't even aware of? He doesn't seem to feel the same about her - or does he? Which one of these men will catch PJ's heart - or will either one? You will have to read Double Trouble to find out for yourself!!!!!! I would say definitely a four-star read.

Happy Reading!

I've had so much fun with the giveaway for Liz's "Here Burns My Candle" that I've decided to do the same with Susan's book, "Double Trouble." Once again I have read this book, but it looks great! What better way to recycle books than to let someone else enjoy them instead of sitting on my shelf unread! I would love for someone to read about PJ Sugar's antics and be able to laugh for just a while.

"Here Burns My Candle" by Liz Curtis Higgs Blog Tour and Book Giveaway!

I met Liz many years ago at a Womans Health Day in our north Georgia community. I will never, never forget her testimony and her story as a young woman struggling to find her way in life. She has a wonderful sense of humor and we all laughed until we cried during her talk. One of her earliest books was about this journey she traveled. Let me tell you that Liz has been an encouragement to many woman (me included) by sharing some painful lessons she learned. If you don't already know Liz I hope you will take the opportunity to learn more about her.

Lady Elisabeth Kerr is a keeper of secrets. A Highlander by birth and a Lowlander by marriage, she honors the auld ways, even as doubts and fears stir deep within her.
Her husband, Lord Donald, has secrets of his own, well hidden from the household, yet whispered among the town gossips.
His mother, the dowager Lady Marjory, hides gold beneath her floor and guilt inside her heart. Though her two abiding passions are maintaining her place in society and coddling her grown sons, Marjory’s many regrets, buried in Greyfriars Churchyard, continue to plague her.
One by one the Kerr family secrets begin to surface, even as bonny Prince Charlie and his rebel army ride into Edinburgh in September 1745, intent on capturing the crown.
A timeless story of love and betrayal, loss and redemption, flickering against the vivid backdrop of eighteenth-century Scotland,
Here Burns My Candleillumines the dark side of human nature, even as hope, the brightest of tapers, lights the way home.

My Take on Here Burns My Candle: When I first began reading this book I thought there is no way I will be able to finish - it was just too hard to get used to the difference in the language. Now I can say that I am so, so thankful that I hung in there and read all the way through. It is a wonderful book that will transfer you to a different place and a different time - Edinburgh, 1745. Of course, customs were much different then than they are now, but the human emotions, desires and needs transcends all times which you will discover through getting to know the main character Lady Elisabeth Kerr and her husband Lord Donald and his family. You will have the opportunity to watch a bond grow between Lady Elisabeth Kerr and her mother-in-law Lady Marjory. You might even find some similarities to the story of Ruth. By the time I finished reading this wonderful book I found myself thinking in the Highlander language. You just might, too! Please take this opportunity to visit Liz Curtis Higgs website. Also, take a moment to hop on over to You Tube and check out the trailer for Here Burns My Candle.

"The Atonement Child" by Francine Rivers

I haven't read this book, but my good friend Douglas (Rebecca) Maddox has just finished reading it and I asked her to write a review on it. Douglas is a member of a pro-life group at her church - St. Mary's in Northwest Georgia. She said this was very timely for the cause she has been involved in recently and one that is close to her heart. She told me that Francine did a wonderful job giving different perspectives from all of the players in an unplanned pregnancy. Without further ado here we go:

Back Cover: In one horrific, terrifying moment, Dinah Carey's perfect life is shattered by rape, her future irrevocably altered by an unwanted pregnancy, her doting family torn apart. Her seemingly rock solid faith is pushed to the limits as she faces the most momentous choice of her life -- to embrace or to end the untimely life within her.

Author: Francine Rivers, winner of the EPCA Gold Medallion, has been writing for almost 30 years. Her books have received numerous awards and have endeared her to millions of readers.

Douglas' Take: Atonement Child by Francine Rivers tackles two sensitive issues, abortion and pregnancy as the result of rape.Dynah Carey is a student at a Christian college as is her fiance Ethan The wedding is set for summer after Ethan graduates with a degree that will allow him to pursue a career as a minister. On her way home from her job in a local restaurant one evening Dynah is assaulted and raped. The rape results in a pregnancy and we are taken on an emotional yet faith filled journey with Dynah as the pregnancy progresses and effects not only her life but all of those who love her.
Ms Rivers shows us the many faces of abortion promotion even among the faithful.Dynah's struggle brings forth a number of confessions from family and friends.Women who suffered pregnancy loss by choice through abortion or by miscarriage share the long lasting damage done. She does a beautiful job of telling a compelling story based on faith while revealing that abortion is never the simple procedure it is sold as.
This book should be on every high school required reading list.

Thank you so much Douglas, for being a visiting reviewer. It is great to have a fresh voice reviewing some of the wonderful Christian Fiction books available. Please come again soon and give us your take on another book! To visit Francine's web page and learn more about her books please go to the following link: http://www.francinerivers.com/

Two New Love Inspired Reviews!

I wrote the previous post in preparation for writing these two reviews. Both of these reviews are on Love Inspired Suspense books published by Steeple Hill Publishing. These are the two free books that I received from the book club offer. Let me say I was not disappointed with either book. Without further ado, here are the reviews.

Trial by Fire

Trial by Fire by Cara Putman
Back Cover: Her mother's house was first. then her brother's. County prosecutor Tricia Jamison is sure she's next on the arsonist's list. But who is after her family? And why does every fire throw her in Noah Brust's path?

Noah can't forgive Tricia. Her failure to protect him on the stand the previous year meant his father's reputation was ruined. Yet every time the firefighter is near her, he's drawn to her again. The vulnerability she hides under her confident veneer surprises and moves him. Torn between Tricia's safety and his own bitterness, Noah belatedly remembers the first rule of fire fighting: don't get burned.

About the Author Cara Putnam: Since the time she could read Nancy Drew, Cara has wanted to write mysteries. for years she asked God if this dream was from him. Her life was full. She graduated with honors from the University of Nebraska Lincoln, moved to the Washington DC area, married the man of her dreams, worked in the nonprofit world, went to George Mason Law school at night while working and then started having children. While her life was far from empty, the dream wouldn't die. Then she followed her husband to Indiana. Talk about starting over! In 2005 she attended a book signing where she met Colleen Coble. The rest, as they say, is history. With prompting from her husband, Cara started her writing dream with Colleen. Cara's been writing ever since. To learn more about Cara and her books, please visit her at www.caraputman.com.

My Take: I had not read any of Cara's books before reading this one, but have heard her name many times. I must say I have found a new author to read and look forward to reading more of her books. This is a story of a young woman who appears to those around her to be very strong and confident. But there are things in Tricia Jamison's past that haunt her. The secrets have taken a toll on her life and have affected her work. She also has a strained relationship with her mother because of a secret she has refused to tell her mother.

During the course of several fires that have struck her mother's home, her brothers home, and finally destroyed her home she has come to a point where she knows she must deal with her past so she can move on to her future. Surprisingly Noah Brust, a man who lost his trust in her, will be the one to help her through her difficult past. Will they be able to mend a misunderstanding and build a relationship? Well, did you really think I would tell you the answer to that? You will have read the book to find out for yourself. I will say you won't be disappointed and that Tricia does find her way to a new beginning and freedom from her past secrets.

Double Take

Double Take by Jenness Walker:
Cole Leighton can barely believe his eyes. A woman on his bus has just been abducted -- in an exact reflection of a scene from the best-selling novel he is reading. Someone is bringing the book to life... and isn't above forcing an innocent woman to follow the story to its tragic end. Using the novel as his playbook, Cole catches up with the beautiful victim -- but rescuing Kinsey Jacobs doesn't keep her safe for long. The killer is writing his own ending, and none of the twists and turns lead to a happily ever after.

About the Author: Jenness Walker has always loved a good story. She grew up scouting around her grandparents basement for something good to read. Today she doesn't feel complete if she doesn't have a book nearby. When she's not reading or writing, she enjoys hanging out with her husband, playing with her part time dog and planning trips to explore small town America.

My Take: Jenness Walker is another new author to me. I haven't heard her name before, but I know I won't forget it. This is one of those books that keep you on the edge of your seat from the very beginning and doesn't slow down until the very last page. It takes place in Atlanta, Georgia and since I am from North Georgia I was familiar with some of the areas in the book - that was fun. I also thought this was a unique plot - I haven't read anything similar and I've read a lot of books. I'm sure it took a lot of time and effort to come up with the twists and turns this thriller will take you on. If you like this kind of intense suspense then you are going to love this.

You can find either one of these books on the Steeple Hill site! Please go and visit the site or go directly to the authors sites and learn more about them and their writing.
